Review of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Cloudy With a Chance of MeatballsWe had a great afternoon today! We met up with my friend Nat, her niece, and her mom, and we went to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. I have to say that before we had kids, I couldn’t care less about animated movies. Now that we have a child, I’ve discovered that adults too can really enjoy children’s movies. When I was younger, kid’s movies were really geared for just kids, but these days they make them entertaining for the parents as well. I actually laugh at the jokes.

I am giving this movie an 8.5/10. It had it’s share of funny moments and the story was quite interesting. The movie follows the story of a kid who dreams of being an inventor. He lives on an island in the Atlantic that is isolated from the rest of the US, but still considered America. Because they are so isolated, they have limited resources for food.  The main character, Flint, has been an outcast most of his life, until one day he creates an invention that helps solve his city’s food shortage problem. And the story takes off from there. I don’t want to ruin the movie for anyone, so I won’t tell you any more.

The storyline is very original and does wonders for the imagination. I can’t imagine what the writer was thinking when he/she wrote this movie, but he/she really has a vast imagination. The 3D effects were very cool. The only downside is that you have to wear those awkward 3D glasses throughout the whole movie. I was quite surprised that my 2 year old actually kept the glasses on for the entire movie. It was worth it though because the entire movie is in 3D. We saw Up when it came out and only portions of the movie were in 3D, so if you didn’t wear the glasses it wasn’t a big deal, but this movie is ALL in 3D.

Now here is my rant about 3D movies – why is it so expensive? I seriously think that this is some sort of conspiracy from the movie theatres. Years ago the prices of movies went up to $11. People started getting ticked off about this, so people stopped going to the movies. The movie theatres were losing revenue, so they reacted by lowering the prices to $9. Over the last couple of years, the prices have slowly crept back up to $11. Do they not think we have noticed because I have! Now they’ve come up with the idea of this 3D, and they charge $13.50 for it. Why don’t they give you the option of watching the movie in non-3D? Going to the movies has become a real expensive outing, especially if you are a family. I can’t imagine how much it would cost for a family of five if you include popcorn and drinks. I really love going to the movies, but I seriously think they are shooting themselves in the foot by continuously increasing prices. There are always new technologies emerging and I think the movie industry is starting to move into a different direction. We are already starting to see the extinction of video rental stores. It’s only a matter of time before the theatres start to experience the same thing.

Okay, that’s enough for the ranting. Overall, I really liked this movie and I would recommend it to other parents. The 3D is neat, but if you have the option to see it in non-3D, you will still enjoy it. The plot is interesting enough to keep you entertained without all the wow factor from the 3D.
